In 1967 the park was named in honor of Commissioner Charles Barney Smith, who served on both the Broward County and the Hollywood City Commission. Since 1986, in late January the park hosts the 99.9 KISS Country Chili CookOff which is the largest country music festival and chili competition in South Florida.The park is also home to Paradise Cove Water Park which features four five-story-tall waterslides that corkscrew into a four-foot-deep plunge pool.
